Speakers Series in the Bay Area – a Great Learning Opportunity

One way to learn how to effectively give presentations and speeches is to go listen to great speakers. If you live in the Bay Area in California, you have the opportunity starting in September to attend the MPSF, Inc. Speaker Series. The MPSF Speaker Series has twice been voted “Best Lecture Series in the Nation” by the International Platform Association, and provides 3 separate speakers series locations:

  • Oakland Speakers Series at the Paramount Theatre
  • Peninsula Speaker Series at the San Mateo Performing Arts Center
  • Marin and Marin II Speaker Series at the Marin Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium

Past speakers have included President Jimmy Carter, Bill Moyers, Lesley Stahl, Ann Richard and Carl Sagan.

The 2008/2009 MPSF Speakers Series will feature:

Sylvia Earle (called “the Carl Sagan of our oceans” by USA Today)
Robert Reich vs Newt Gingrich
Ann Compton
Dick Cavett
Fareed Zakaria
Andrew Weil
Jeffery Toobin
Charlie Rose

Unfortunately, you can’t buy individual tickets to individual lectures, but must purchase a ticket to the entire series, which begin at $300.

Again, listening to great speakers speaking on fascinating topics is a great way to help develop your own style of presenting. Listen to the speakers and how they use pauses to emphasize their point. Listen to how their words sound like poetry. Watch how they use their body language. All that adds up to a great speech.
